Exhibitions

The DAC holds two exhibitions a year, one restricted to members' only, the second being an open show to which any artist, professsional or amateur, may submit work. Both exhibitions are highly regarded for the consistently high quality of the paintings on show, and they are held at times when there are many holiday visitors to the area.

The Rules for each exhibition are broadly the same, in that a limited number of both framed and unframed paintings may be submitted (usually up to 4 framed, and 4 unframed), for a non-returnable entry fee per painting. Commission on any sales is taken by the Club. The precise numbers of pictures which may be submitted for any exhibition, and the entry fees and commission rate on sales, is determined some weeks before each exhibition (depending on the anticipated expense of arranging the exhibition), and notified when entry forms are sent to artists. The dates are similarly decided at the beginning of each season, and are published on this website and notified to members in the DAC newsletter. If space allows, as many entries as possible are hung in the Members' Exhibition, but there is a selection process for the Open Exhibition (except for unframed paintings), and some entries may be rejected or placed in reserve.

Exhibition Rules

It is hoped that in future entry forms for DAC Exhibitions will be produced as pages on this site, so that they can be filled in on-line, printed, and brought to the exhibition venue together with artists' exhibits.  Until this is arranged, as a guide, the following rules fo Open Exhibitions apply.

Submision of works:  Four original framed works (or eight framed miniature works maximum size 15 x 11,5 cm, or 6" x 4.5" framed) may be submitted, combination of sizes being accepted with two miniatures being equivalent to one larger painting.  In addition, four unframed works may be submitted.

Conditions Works may be in any medium (oil, w/colour, acrylic, pastel or crayon, pencil, ink, screen-printing, collage, woven tapestry and sculpture).   Submitted works must not have been shown at a previous DAC exhibition, and must not be copies of copyright works.   Sculptures must be free-standing, and cast metal works must be from a limited edition.   A Selection Panel of four persons with artistic experience, chaired by the DAC Chairman (who will have a casting vote), will choose the works to be hung or displayed.  Works not hung or displayed may either be held in reserve, or rejected.  Reserved works may be removed at the Preview if the artist wishes, and once removed may not be returned for exhibition.

PresentationFramed works must be securely framed to a good, saleable standard.  Glazed work with unprotected edges (clip frames) will not be accepted.  Backing boards must be neatly sealed with tape or a suitable alternative to cover fixing pins or clips.  Mounts must be clean, well-cut and unmarked.  Stretched canvases may be presented without frames but must not have exposed nails or staples.  Pictures not meeting these criteria will be rejected at handing-in.

Framed works must be strung with taut hanging cord attached to two screw eyes or 'D' rings located one third down from the top of the frame.  The cord must be of string, nylon or wire of sufficient strength to support the painting.  Wire ends must be fixed so they cannot cause injury to handlers.

Labels: Thin card labels must be attached to the hanging cord by string long enought to allow the label to hang over the top of the painting.

A label must be attached firmly to the back of the work.

All labels must show the TITLE OF THE WORK,  its MEDIUM,  the ARTIST'S NAME, and the PRICE (ALL IN BLOCK CAPITALS PLEASE)

Unframed (portfolio) work:  Must be backed by clean board of a minimum size 30 cm x 40 cm (12" x 16") and be enclosed in clear plastic film (not cling film) with all edges sealed by tape.  A label with TITLE, MEDIUM, ARTIST's NAME and ADDRESS,  and PRICE must be fixed to the top front of the work with sellotape or masking tape.
